Disclaimer
Insects Explained publishes general educational information about insects, their identification and pest management.
Identification
Identifications based on descriptions, illustrations or our finder are suggestions. Many insects look alike, and confirming an identification often requires examining a specimen. For insects that could damage your home or affect your health, confirm the identification with your county extension office or a licensed pest-management professional before acting.
Pesticides and treatments
Our pages describe how treatment methods work. They are not instructions for any specific product. Pesticide labels are legal documents: read the entire label and follow it exactly, and keep products away from children and pets. Some treatments, including fumigation and restricted-use pesticides, may only be applied by licensed professionals.
Health
Information about bites, stings, allergies and insect-borne disease is general and is not medical advice. If you have a severe reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat, call 911. For questions about a pesticide exposure, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. For other health concerns, consult a doctor.
Property and structural issues
Insect damage to buildings can be hidden. Our content does not replace a professional inspection, a wood-destroying insect report for a real estate transaction, or advice from a structural engineer.
